Wayne Rooney’s Derby County are SAFE after a six-goal thriller with Sheffield Wednesday on the final day of the Championship season – sending the Owls and Rotherham down to League One in the process.
The Millers were set to stay up at the Rams’ expense following Lewis Wing’s early opener before Marlon Pack’s 88th minute equaliser denied them an improbable survival.
And incredible contest at Pride Park saw Rooney’s side battle back twice from losing positions on an unforgettable final day.
Martyn Waghorn headed an equaliser after Sam Hutchinson put Wednesday ahead in first-half stoppage time before Manchester City Patrick Roberts gave Derby the lead with a brilliant strike.
Callum Paterson levelled and Julian Borner restored Wednesday’s lead but Waghorn had the final say when substitute Kamil Jozwiak was fouled by Chey Dunkley in the box, holding his nerve to score the decisive penalty.
Responding to news of Derby’s dramatic survival, Danny Mills told talkSPORT that Rooney and co were fortunate not to be relegated to League One.
“It’s absolutely huge for Derby County football club that is for sure,” Mills said.
“Is it down to Wayne Rooney or has it got a little bit lucky?
“I’d say he’s got a bit lucky towards the end, Rotherham were what four or five minutes from sending them both down?
“They’ve obviously had a big fightback after half-time and got themselves back into it in the end.”
Mills believes huge question marks must be asked as to whether the Manchester United icon should continue as Derby’s boss moving forward.
“I think big decisions have got to be made now at Derby.
“They brought Wayne Rooney in and they’ve somehow managed to get away with it this season.
“Now is the decision to make is he the right man for next season and beyond?”
