Aston Villa are close to securing a £30million move for Norwich forward Emi Buendia, who had attracted interest from Arsenal.
The 24-year-old, recently named Championship Player of the Season after inspiring Norwich to promotion, has been on the Gunners’ radar since January.
The Athletic state that a deal to take the Argentine to Villa Park is all but completed, with his medical already completed in his homeland and personal terms agreed.
The transfer, which will include several add-ons and a sell-on clause, will surpass the previous £25million record fee Norwich received for the sale of Ben Godfrey to Everton last summer.
The move is also a record fee from Villa’s perspective, with the transfer expected to rise to the region of £40m.
Earlier in the day Goal claimed that Villa were leading the race for the Canaries star after submitting a ‘very good’ offer.
The Sun recently reported that the newly-promoted outfit accepted that Buendia would leave this summer and wanted £40m for the Argentine, who bagged 15 goals and 16 assists in the second tier in 2020/21.
Arsenal confirmed earlier this week that Martin Odegaard will return to Madrid following his successful loan spell at the Emirates, leaving a gap in their squad for Buendia to fill.
Villa could also be faced with a similar vacancy if captain Jack Grealish leaves in this window amid links to Premier League champions Manchester City.
With the England international thought to be worth around £100m, Villa would not be short of money to take Arsenal all the way in their quest for Buendia.
