Bruno Lage set to be named Nuno Espirito Santo’s successor at Wolves on Wednesday with Jorge Mendes playing key role in appointment

Wolves are set to announce the appointment of Bruno Lage as their new manager on Wednesday, talkSPORT understands.

The ex-Benfica boss has been given the go-ahead to take over from Nuno Espirito Santo at Molineux following a successful work permit hearing on Wednesday.

Lage, who has previously had spells as assistant manager at Swansea and Sheffield Wednesday, is thought to have turned down numerous opportunities since departing Lisbon last summer.

The 45-year-old led the Portuguese giants to the league title in 2019 before leaving a year later.

Interestingly, the Portuguese is a client of super agent Jorge Mendes, who also represents ex-boss Nuno and a number of other Wolves players.

The Midlands club are understood have interviewed a number of other options, but their first-choice candidate was always believed to be Lage.

His expansive style of play and the opportunity to retain the club’s Portuguese-heavy culture is believed to be among the many reasons why he was selected as their no.1 candidate.

Meanwhile, former manager Espirito Santo is set to be announced as the new manager of Crystal Palace.

Roy Hodgson stepped down as Eagles boss at the end of the 2020/21 season and the Premier League club have been searching for his replacement in the past weeks.

Nuno, 47, has been locked in talks with the south London club since leaving Wolves at the end of the season.
