Dan James looked furious after being substituted immediately after Wales’ notched a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw against Switzerland in their opening game of Euro 2020.
The Manchester United winger impressed for Robert Page’s men in the Group A encounter – and was incensed by the decision to withdraw him straight after Kieffer Moore’s header cancelled out Breel Embolo’s opener.
Wales legend Dean Saunders, who was on co-commentary duties for talkSPORT, was baffled by the decision to take off James.
“I was just praising Rob Page for choosing to play Moore instead of Harry Wilson, but what’s he doing taking James off? I hope he’s not injured. He’s been man of the match, for me,” Saunders said.
“He wasn’t too happy about coming off, but he’s gone straight down the tunnel. He was the man who was creating all the danger for Wales, all game.
“He must be injured, surely. Otherwise, why would he come off? Dan James had an outstanding match, he caused them trouble all afternoon.”
Page confirmed after the match that James hadn’t picked up a knock, with the decision purely a tactical one.
“It was for the good of the team,” Page told the BBC.
“There’s three games in succession [coming up] and he looked dead on his feet. It’s all about the squad.”
Earlier in the game, Saunders had hailed the Man United’s winger’s performance and energy.
He said: “Dan James looks like he can run for days, here. He looks like an Olympic athlete.”
And he was full of praise after the match, adding: “Dan James causes havoc and he will do that against the best defences.”
