Kalvin Phillips was thinking out loud with talkSPORT after Germany were confirmed as England’s next opponents at Euro 2020.
But the England and Leeds midfielder was a little distracted from the tournament on Wednesday night due to a surprise performance by Ed Sheeran at St George’s Park.
While we all watched the roller-coaster climax to Group F, which saw England’s next game rotate between all four nations, the Three Lions were serenaded by one of music’s biggest stars on their day off.
“He’s a good friend of Harry Kane and he asked him to come down,” Phillips told talkSPORT.
“He was singing while we were eating food. I’ve been to see him quite a few times, he was very nice, I was talking to him a fair bit and the music he was playing was brilliant.”
Phillips added: “It was during [the Group F matches]. The games were going on while Ed was playing music.
“We watched parts of the games. It was a good night. It was a weird one, to be fair.
“Everyone was around each other, the coaching staff and the team, and it was nice to be all together.”
Phillips continued: “When Ed was playing, I was more focused on his music!
“When the goals were going in, we thought we were going to play different teams, but we knew before that whatever game it was would be tough, so the results didn’t really matter.”
Phillips, 25, was just six-months old when Gareth Southgate missed that penalty and England were dumped out of Euro ’96 by the Germans at Wembley.
Of course, he understands the history and the challenge of facing Germany, but the midfielder is reluctant to build the occasion into something bigger than another important match.
“It’s just like any other game, for me,” Phillips added. “I know the rivalry between England and Germany – and I know we’ve not had a great record against them.
“But for me, it’s just another game to go out and try and win. Germany are a very good team, they’ve got world class players. But we’ve also got world class players in our team.”
