Raheem Sterling HAS to start against Germany on Tuesday against Mats Hummels in England’s last-16 Euro 2020 game.
That’s the view of talkSPORT host, and former Chelsea player, Jason Cundy who believes the Three Lions should not fear their opponents.
Germany booked a last-16 clash with England at Wembley on Tuesday thanks to a late Leon Goretzka goal to send them through second in Group F.
With just six minutes to go, Hungary were going through and Joachim Low’s side heading home before the equaliser to make it 2-2 changed the table dramatically.
It sets up another knockout tie between England and Germany and there has been some classics in the past.
But Cundy believes this Germany side are not to be fear like those in years gone by.
“Based on what I saw tonight, they are not the scary Germany we’ve seen in the past,” Cundy said on The Sports Bar.
“They were going out tonight and were getting beaten by Hungary. This is not the scariest Germany side I’ve seen.
“If ever there’s been a reason to play and not have to justify playing Raheem Sterling to anyone, it’s this game.
“Mats Hummels looks like he’s running in treacle and they play three at the back.
“We know who they have and the quality they have. Havertz had an off day today, but was brilliant when they beat Portugal 4-2.
“Sane was dreadful tonight. If you think of someone who has the quality in big games, Toni Kroos is it.
“It’s not the German side of the past where you think ‘wow’. They are going to be tough, but I don’t think they have anything we’ll be shaking in our boots about.
“When you play three at the back, the obvious space is in behind the wing-backs. Germany are going to push their wing-backs forward and play high. They are an attacking side.
“I believe that is where we can genuinely hurt them. You would love a 1-vs-1 with Hummels.”
