Fire fighters are tackling a blaze next to Southend United’s Roots Hall stadium.
Essex Fire and Rescue Service has four crews attending the scene, having been called to the vicinity at 17:45 BST.
Pictures on social media showed a huge cloud of black smoke coming from a building on Roots Hall Avenue.
It said fire was ‘creating a significant amount of smoke’ with the crews in attendance battling to prevent its spread.
They have advised all residents living nearby to keep windows and doors closed while they deal with the issue.
A storage room, believed to store a significant amount of AstroTurf, is where the fire appears to have arisen, according to reports online.
Your Southend state that fire alarms are sounding throughout the stadium, with more hoses being laid to tackle the fire.
A further statement from Essex Police confirmed that the stadium itself was not affected by the blaze.
It read: “To confirm, this fire is not affecting the football stadium itself.
“Steady progress is being made. The incident commander has reported that several tonnes of astroturf continue to be around 20 per cent alight.
“Because the fire is deeply seated within the material, a mechanical digger will be used to move the material around and make it easier for crews to extinguish.
“Crews expect to be at the scene for some time – please continue to avoid the area.”
