France v Wales: Confirmed team news

Skipper Gareth Bale won his 91st cap as Wales fielded a strong team for their Euro 2020 warm-up friendly against France in Nice.

Wales made two changes from the side which beat the Czech Republic in a 2022 World Cup qualifier in March, with record caps holder Chris Gunter and fit-again Joe Allen replacing James Lawrence and Ethan Ampadu.

Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris captained France for the 100th time as Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema ended an international absence of over five years by joining Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe in Les Bleus’ attack.

France: Lloris; Pavard, Varane, Kimpembe, Hernandez; Tolisso, Pogba, Rabiot, Griezmann, Mbappé, Benzema.

Wales: Ward; C Roberts, Mepham, Rodon, Gunter, N Williams, Allen, Morrell, Bale, James, Wilson.

Juventus’ Ramsey is a fitness doubt for Wales

France v Wales: What has been said?

Wales boss Robert Page will take no risks rushing back key players after admitting that some may not fully recover in time for the start of Euro 2020.

Juventus playmaker Aaron Ramsey, Stoke midfielder Joe Allen and Tottenham defender Ben Davies are all heading into the tournament having had little or no game time since the end of March.

“We have players that are coming back from injury,” Page said.

“We can’t see into the future, we don’t know whether they are going to fully recover. So we have had to take a gamble on a couple of them anyway.

“Aaron has not played the amount of minutes that he would have liked in Italy and we have to be sympathetic.

“We can’t push him at 100 miles per hour to start with. What is important is I have all the best players in the squad ready for that first (Euro 2020) game against Switzerland.

“It’s pointless pushing him early doors and have somebody break down when you are past that point of no return and they are out for the first couple of games.”
