Harry Kane was ‘bullied by Grant Hanley’ and didn’t do the basics against Scotland as Gabriel Agbonlahor calls for England to appoint a ‘big manager’ like Joachim Low

Former England star Gabriel Agbonlahor believes Three Lions captain Harry Kane was bullied in their 0-0 draw with Scotland at Euro 2020.

Kane cut an isolated figure against Steve Clarke’s men and was unable to register a shot on target in the clash at Wembley.

His performance, which saw him touch the ball just 19 times in his 74 minutes on the pitch, has been widely criticised.

Although, it can be easily argued it was partially down to the lack of service provided by those around him.

But Agbonlahor reckons it was a lethargic showing from the player, currently being linked with a huge summer transfer to Man City, and one which saw him fail to do the basics.

He told the Euro Sports Bar Weekender: “When you watch Harry Kane for Spurs you see him pressing defenders, you see him energetic, you see him make a chance out of nothing for himself.

“These two games I’ve seen him play, he hasn’t done that.

“He’s lethargically chasing down defenders. He’s getting bullied by defenders.

“Grant Hanley, no disrespect to him, he’s had a decent career but he was bullying Kane.

“Every time he tried running with the ball, the Scottish defenders were catching him with ease. He wasn’t holding the ball up. His first touch was giving it away.

“As much as, yeah, he wasn’t getting the chances but he wasn’t doing the basic stuff that an England No.9 should be doing.”

England manager Gareth Southgate opted to take Kane off with 16 minutes to go and brought Manchester United star Marcus Rashford on.

It was a huge call which didn’t pay off but Agbonlahor wants to see the Three Lions with a bigger risk taker in charge, one willing to drop big stars from his starting line-up, not just substitute them.

One such man is Joachim Low, and Agbonlahor was full of praise for the German boss, who is set to leave his role at the end of Euro 2020.

He told the talkSPORT: “He’s made some big decisions like Leroy Sane, how good is he? He can’t get in the side.

“It shows he’s a big manager, he will make these big decisions.

“England need a big manager who will drop a player, even if he is a big player. It’s best for the team.

“I think he’s done a great job there and it wouldn’t surprise me, Germany they could easily win it, sneakily.”
