Jack Grealish likened to Paul Gascoigne and can be the player of Euro 2020, says ex-teammate, who claims England star was ‘the hardest working young talent’ he has ever seen

Phil Foden’s new barnet may make him look like Paul Gascoigne during Euro 1996 but it’s Jack Grealish who’s most like the England legend.

This is according to Robert Snodgrass, who believes his former Aston Villa teammate can become one of the players of Euro 2020.

Fine performances during England’s pre-tournament friendlies have led to growing calls for Gareth Southgate to start Grealish in their opener against Croatia on Sunday, LIVE on talkSPORT.

And Snodgrass is very much in that camp, claiming the 25-year-old is the closest to Three Lions icon Gazza he’s ever seen.

“Every single time I watch Jack Grealish he looks like he’s getting better,” Snodgrass told talkSPORT Breakfast.

“I’ve not seen anyone like him. He’s the closest to Gascoigne that I’ve seen. He takes it anywhere, he dribbles past people.

“If he plays every game he’ll be one of the players of the tournament.”

While Grealish’s talent was always clear to see, there have been question marks about his commitment due to off-field incidents he’s been caught up in – even Southgate had been reluctant to select him for previous England squads.

But Snodgrass, who played alongside Grealish on loan at Villa, rejected any suggestion the England star lacks a work-ethic as he shed fascinating light on his tireless efforts behind the scenes.

“A lot of people questioned him for a good few years and he knew that,” Snodgrass added.

“When I was at Villa he was coming back from an injury and people were questioning how many goals and assists he was getting.

“But he came back from that injury and I’ve never seen a harder working young talent than him, Declan Rice is another in the England set-up who I played with an he’s an exceptional talent.

“But Jack Grealish, every kid should watch him. There are lots of off-field things that people have spoken about and that’s my pet hate. We speak a lot about the negatives but no one sees the work going on behind the scenes, that kid works as hard as I’ve ever seen.

“He’s in the gym 6/7o’clock every single day, he took the fitness coach Oli Stephenson, who would put him through hard, intense sessions to live in his house.”
