Jadon Sancho vows to join Declan Rice in trying his first ever beer – if his MUM allows him – as Engand ace aims for Euro 2020 success after overcoming injury fears

Jadon Sancho will join Declan Rice in drinking his first beer if England enjoy a successful summer… so long as he gets his mum’s seal of approval!

Gareth Southgate’s young squad are in stark contrast to Terry Venables’ crop at Euro ’96, who gained notoriety for their escapades ahead of the tournament.

Declan Rice admitted earlier this week he has never even tasted a drop of lager – much to Alan Brazil’s disgust – but will try one if England win the Euros.

And Sancho joked to talkSPORT he’ll do the same, if he can get permission, of course.

“I think I will join him,” Sancho told talkSPORT when asked about Rice’s declaration. “I’ve never had a beer!

“I’m not really a big drinker so I don’t know about that.

“I need to ask my mum if I am allowed!”

The Borussia Dortmund winger is relaxed heading into the Euros and feeling fit and fresh having recovered from a muscle injury he picked up in March, which saw him miss the Champions League quarter-final clashes with former side Manchester City.

At the time, Erdin Terzic’s men had just six games remaining and were struggling to qualify for Europe’s elite competition – until Sancho returned.

The 21-year-old scored four goals, got two assists and two Man of the Match awards as BVB finished third in the Bundesliga and beat RB Leipzig 4-1 to win the German Cup.

His return to form and fitness will also have placed a rather large grin on Gareth Southgate’s face before the commencement of the European Championship.

With Croatia looming large on Sunday in England’s Group D opener at Wembley, Sancho knew he had to put the work in in order to return to his best.

“To be fair, when I got injured I was disappointed because I was in such great form,” he told talkSPORT’s Faye Carruthers.

“But I knew that I had to come back even stronger and obviously, that’s what I’ve done in my recovery as well.

“So I was just focusing on myself and being in the gym and working on a few things that I needed to work on.

“I came back even stronger, getting us through. I think we were about sixth or seventh in the league and we needed to make Champions League qualification.

“So we had targets, especially to win the Pokal, I’m happy that I came back and lifted the team with some motivation and some goals and assists.”
