Kevin De Bruyne inspires Belgium to victory over valiant Denmark at Euro 2020 as both sides pay emotional tribute to Christian Eriksen

Belgium became the second side to book their spot in the Euro 2020 knockout stages with Kevin De Bruyne playing a starring role in a hard-fought victory over Denmark.

Players from both sides paid tribute to midfielder Christian Eriksen, who suffered a cardiac arrest last week, on an emotional evening in Copenhagen.

The hosts produced a stirring first-half display, and went into the break a goal to the good after Yussuf Poulsen’s second-minute striker.

Romelu Lukaku, Dries Merterns and Yannick Carrasco were unable to have any sort of influence on the game in the first half.

But things soon changed when De Bruyne came on, with Real Madrid outcast Eden Hazard also brought on.

First, the Man City midfielder received a cut-back from Lukaku, took a deft and deadly touch before squaring it for Thorgan Hazard – who had the easy task of tapping home from close range.

De Bruyne is now the only European player to have assisted a goal in each of the last four major tournaments.

He’s also made eight assists for Belgium in major tournaments (World Cup & Euros); since the 2014 World Cup, with no European player supplying more across the two competitions.

Responding to De Bruyne’s decisive winner, talkSPORT commentator Nigel Pearson said: “Belgium have the lead. And who else could it be but that man Kevin De Bruyne with his 22nd goal for his country. Just brilliant.”

Co-commentator Matt Holland added: “Off the bench he’s set one up, he’s scored the other. Kevin De Bruyne is some technician.”
