Liverpool youngster Neco Williams made a huge error for Denmark’s second goal as Wales were thrashed 4-0 and crashed out of Euro 2020.
The right-back replaced the injured Connor Roberts in the 41st minute of the last 16 clash with the Dragons already trailing 1-0 thanks to Kasper Dolberg’s opener on Saturday.
And Williams will not want to see Denmark’s second goal again.
Denmark broke and Martin Braithwaite’s cross was poorly cleared by Williams and straight into the path of Dolberg, who drilled the ball past Danny Ward just three minutes after the restart.
Wales legend Dean Saunders lamented Williams’ mistake and insisted he would have brought on the vastly more experienced Chris Gunter instead.
He told talkSPORT: “It’s self-inflicted.
“It’s a foul on Kieffer Moore in the build-up, so the goal shouldn’t be awarded, but we’ve got four vs one in the box and Neco Williams.
“It’s a big game for the young lad, and I don’t want to say it after the event, but I would have brought Chris Gunter on for that reason.
“He’s a young lad, he’s panicked and tried to clear it with his left foot, but he’s hit it straight at Dolberg who’s put it in the back of the net.
“You can’t give away goals like that, it’s just basic defending.
“He could have left the ball, the ball was going absolutely nowhere, it was going out of play, but he’s running back towards his own goal, he’s facing Danny Ward, the ball’s on his left foot and he’s not cleared it properly.
“Instead of clearing it with a bit of height and distance he’s just passed it straight across the face of the goal and it’s a gift for the striker.”
Denmark got a deserved third goal two minutes from time when Joakim Maehle cut in from the right to smash in his second goal of the tournament.
And it got even worse for Wales as Harry Wilson, who was brought on as a second-half substitute, was harshly shown a red card for a foul on Maehle, before Denmark added a fourth goal through Braithwaite in stoppage-time.
Despite starting well, Wales ended up suffering their biggest ever defeat at a European Championship finals.
Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey failed to impact the game as Dolberg curled in the opening goal from just outside the box in the 27th minute.
Wales were fortunate to go in at half-time 1-0 down as Ward made good saves to deny Dolberg and Maehle.
The Dragons looked no different in the second-half as they conceded again through Dolberg thanks to Williams’ poor clearance.
With Wales failing to create any meaningful chances, Denmark’s two late goals confirmed their progress into the Euro 2020 quarter-finals.
