Manchester United prepared to offer Paul Pogba £400,000-a-week contract and make him highest paid Premier League player – but decision to let current deal reach last 12 months labelled ‘crazy’

Manchester United are reportedly prepared to offer Paul Pogba a huge new contract in a bid to keep him at the club.

The France international is heading into the final 12 months of his contract after the club triggered an extension.

But the club face the prospect of losing him for nothing for the second time if they let him run down his contract.

He would be able to sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club in January, if he decides his future is elsewhere.

Pogba left United for free when he was 19 in 2012 and joined Juventus, where he went on to become a star for club and country.

The Red Devils paid £89million to bring him back to Old Trafford in 2016, but could now see him leave again for nothing.

Reports over the weekend claimed that the club feared he would run down his contract and were desperate for him to sign a new deal.

The Sun now claim the 28-year-old will be offered a new five-year contract worth £400,000-a-week.

It would eclipse the £290,000-a-week he is currently paid by United and would make him this highest paid player at the club.

David De Gea is currently the top earner raking in £375,000-a-week.

It would also make him the highest paid player in the Premier League, currently held by Kevin De Bruyne on £385,000-a-week.

The report adds that United will wait until after the Euros to finalise the structure deal.

“I have one year left on my contract, everyone knows that,” Pogba said in a France press conference last week.

“There have been no concrete proposals for extensions. I’m still in Manchester.

“After the season there was the vacation, so I didn’t sit down with the managers and coach. I’m focused on the Euros.”

Former Premier League midfielder Jamie O’Hara is surprised the club have let his contract run down as much.

“It’s crazy they have allowed his contract to get to the final 12 months,” he told the talkSPORT Breakfast show.

“They have to give him the money now and stump up the wages. It’s important they keep him at the club in order to keep progressing.”

O’Hara also said if Jadon Sancho is added in addition to keeping Pogba then they are on the right track to doing so.
