Marcus Rashford captained England and scored the game’s only goal in a 1-0 win over Romania on Sunday.
The Manchester United forward was handed the armband for the first time in his Three Lions career as his 68th-minute penalty proved to be the difference.
It was England’s final warm-up friendly ahead of their Euro 2020 campaign, which kicks off against Croatia next weekend.
England could have made the result more comfortable, however, Jordan Henderson missed a penalty with 12 minutes remaining.
Gareth Southgate gave full debuts to Ben Godfrey, Ben White and Sam Johnstone at the Riverside.
And it was Johnstone who was the busier goalkeeper in the first-half as he saved comfortably from Andrei Ivan and Deian Sorescu.
England struggled to seriously test Romania goalkeeper Florin Nita, but Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Jadon Sancho both struck the crossbar in a drab first-half display.
One man who did his Euro 2020 chances no harm was James Ward-Prowse, whose set-piece deliveries were superb.
England boss Gareth Southgate is yet to select a replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold, who suffered a Euro 2020-ending thigh injury, with Ward-Prowse and Jesse Lingard considered to be contenders to take the Liverpool defender’s spot.
The Three Lions almost broke the deadlock when another Ward-Prowse free-kick was on the money as Calvert-Lewin could only poke the ball straight at Nita.
With England struggling to create clear-cut chances, Jack Grealish drove into the box and was fouled by Tiberiu Capusa.
Grealish looked back to his best after recovering from a shin injury and seems to be a serious contender to start for England at the Euros.
Rashford made no mistake from the spot to score the winning goal.
Johnstone had to be at his best to stop Romania from equalising when he denied Ivan from close-range.
England had chances to extend their lead as Henderson missed a penalty and Jude Bellingham went close late on.
