Netherlands ‘won’t reach Euro 2020 final’ despite winning first two games and reaching last 16 as Depay and Dumfries star in Austria victory

The Netherlands became the third side to book their place in the knockout stages of Euro 2020, but Stuart Pearce doesn’t think they are capable of winning the tournament.

The Dutch joined Italy and Belgium in the last-16 as they won their second straight game of the group stages.

Austria were the victims on this occasion with goals coming from Memphis Depay and Denzel Dumfries in the 2-0 victory.

Depay put the Netherlands ahead from the penalty spot just 11 minutes into the game.

David Alaba had fouled Dumfries in the box, with the former Manchester United man converting from 12 yards out.

Dumfries continues to impress in the tournament and doubled their advantage in the 67th minute with the simplest of tap-ins.

Austria never really threatened the Netherlands goal, though, clearly missing Marko Arnautovic, who was suspended for the game.

The Dutch had plenty of shots, but were far from clinical in front of goal.

The 2-0 victory followed their 3-2 win over Ukraine last week to seal their place in the last-16, their final game will be against winless North Macedonia.

But talkSPORT pundit Stuart Pearce does not believe the Netherlands has what it takes to go all the way in Euro 2020.

He told talkSPORT: “Where do I see the Dutch finishing up? They’ve played a lot better than in the first game. I see a team reasonable up front and I see a team who are okay.

“I think they are a quarter-final team, or a semi-final team with a good draw, but not beyond that.”
