Spain’s preparations for the European Championship have been thrown into chaos after Sergio Busquets tested positive for Covid-19 on Sunday morning, forcing the entire squad to go into isolation and to pull out of their final warm-up game against Lithuania on Tuesday night.
Although all the other members of Spain’s 24-man squad tested negative, Covid protocols have been applied in accordance with Uefa and Spanish health ministry guidelines which mean all players and staff have to isolate within Spain’s Las Rozas HQ, with individual sessions replacing normal training. Busquets was removed from Las Rozas in medicalised transport.
Their friendly against Lithuania at Leganés’s Butarque Stadium on Tuesday night will be played by the under-21s instead.
All activity at Las Rozas has been cancelled with immediate effect, including press conferences and access to outsiders.
Spain’s first game at Euro 2020 is just eight days away, against Sweden in Seville on 14 June. Luis Enrique was the only national team manager not to fill all 26 available slots when he named the squad. Further tests will continue to be carried out.
