‘Thicker lines’ use for marginal offside decisions in Premier League next season welcomed by Danny Murphy, but talkSPORT told there’s a ‘problem’ with the delay caused by VAR

Danny Murphy has welcomed ‘thicker lines’ being introduced to determine marginal offside decisions in the Premier League from next season.

But the talkSPORT pundit has warned that this will not fix all of VAR’s problems.

There have been numerous complaints about the use of VAR since it was brought into the top flight at the start of the 2019/20 season.

As reported by The Times, thicker lines will be used in a bid to deal with the hugely unpopular marginal offside decisions.

The system using thicker lines is already in operation in other UEFA competitions and the Dutch Eredivisie.

Its introduction in the Premier League means television viewers and broadcasters will no longer see the process of the offside lines being drawn, just the final result.

The agreement followed a presentation by Professional Game Match Officials Limited [PGMOL] referees’ chief Mike Riley to clubs at their annual general meeting on Thursday.

The change should give the benefit back to the attacking team after Premier League clubs gave feedback in a VAR survey last season. However, the International Football Association Board (IFAB) – the game’s lawmakers – does not specify how thick the lines will be.

Murphy is happy with this move but believes more needs to be done regarding the delay problems that VAR throws up.

“It’s a step in the right direction,” Murphy told White and Jordan. “One of the pet hates of supporters is these minuscule offside decisions because of their shoulder or knee.

“The more you go away from that in creating a thicker line or daylight, there’s ways of doing it. A thicker line does give more scope to the attacking player.

“It does mean you might get more goals given.

“The problem with the whole offside thing, irrelevant of the whole thick line thing, is the delay it causes and the players and fans not being able to celebrate the goal because of a check.

“That’s the problem for me.”
