Mikkel Damsgaard underlined why he’s been dubbed the next big thing in Denmark with a stunning Euro 2020 goal of the tournament contender against Russia as Kasper Hjulmand’s men advanced to the knockout stages.
The Sampdoria winger, 20, deputised for the absent Christian Eriksen once more for Denmark’s crucial Group B encounter on Monday night.

And Damsgaard’s incredible strike from 25 yards out saw the Parken Stadium erupt and give the hosts a vital lead heading into the interval.
In doing so the youngster became Denmark’s youngest-ever goalscorer at a major tournament (20 years and 353 days).
He is also the first-ever Danish player to score at the Euros born in the 21st century, while he is the youngest player to find the net at this summer’s tournament so far.
Damsgaard received a pass from Tottenham’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg on the half-turn before shifting the ball on to his right foot and bending a brilliant, dipping strike into the top corner.
There’s little wonder why Tottenham are keeping tabs on the prestigious talent, as per Club Doria, with West Ham also said to be keen on Damsgaard according to the Athletic.
Michael Laudrup, Denmark’s greatest-ever footballer, certainly would have enjoyed that one!
The prodigy of Danish football has well and truly arrived.
And Denmark have also arrived into the last 16 of the tournament after an incredible final set of results.
Following Damsgaard’s brilliant opener, Denmark were handed a gift to double their lead just shy of the hour mark.
Daler Kuzyaev played a blind back-pass straight into the path of Yussuf Poulsen, who was never going to miss with an open goal at his mercy.
There were many twists and turns in an action-packed second half, with a Romelu Lukaku goal overturned in Finland’s game with Belgium thanks to a late VAR call as Artem Dzyuba’s penalty got Russia back into second place alongside Roberto Martinez’s men.

But there would be more drama and in favour of the Danes – news which will come as a major boost to their much-loved colleague Eriksen, who suffered a cardiac arrest in Denmark’s opening group game against Finland.
Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen hit a stunning third on 79 minutes before Joakim Maehle made it 4-1 three minutes later.
Lukaku also got his just rewards in the other game by scoring his second goal of the tournament as Belgium finished group winners with a 2-0 victory having picked up maximum points from their three fixtures.
And to cap it off Denmark have scored four plus goals in a match at a major tournament for the first time since the 1998 World Cup (4-1 win against Nigeria). What a night!
