Harry Maguire: Manchester United captain’s lawyer asks Greece court to delay assault trial

Harry Maguire’s legal team have asked a Greek court to postpone his trial over an alleged assault on a police officer – claiming they haven’t had enough time to prepare for the case.

The Manchester United defender was arrested and spent two night in a jail cell after the alleged altercation on the Greek island of Mykonos last week.

Alexis Anagnostakis, who is representing the England international, is one of Greece’s top human rights lawyers.

Anagnostakis has asked for the case to be delayed as the list of charges were only finalised on Monday.

In addition to that he claims he only received a hard copy of the file this morning – two hours before the trial started.

Maguire, who was not in attendance in court on Tuesday, has already pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Maguire’s place in Gareth Southgate’s next Three Lions squad is in jeopardy following the incident.

Southgate will name his first squad in nine months on Tuesday and the potential exclusion of Maguire will be the main talking points.

He most recently dropped Sterling from a Euro 2020 qualifying clash with Montenegro following a training ground bust-up with Liverpool defender Joe Gomez.
