Matteo Guendouzi sends message to ‘unique’ Unai Emery after ex-Arsenal boss beats Manchester United in Europa League final with Villarreal

Matteo Guendouzi labelled Unai Emery unique after the former Arsenal boss lifted the Europa League for a fourth time.

The final against Manchester United ended with a thrilling penalty shootout, which went Villarreal’s way 11-10 as David De Gea was the first to miss after 21 successful spot kicks.

Guendouzi, who is still contracted to Arsenal, was signed by Emery at the north London club back in 2018.

He immediately became an important player for the Spaniard, and showed that respect in a message on social media.

Guendouzi wrote on Twitter: What a journey! This Football… so smart and elegant!

“You made the dream of an entire city, of a club, a team, and of all the fans come true!

“You did it! You know how to win trophies!  Hats off Monsieur Emery.

“You are so unique.”

In a second tweet, he wrote: “I am honored (sic) and proud to have had the opportunity to evolve by your side.  Words will never be strong enough to qualify your personality, your benevolence and your authenticity in human relationships.

“All my congratulations coach @UnaiEmery_ and bravo to @VillarrealCF.”

Guendouzi has not enjoyed the best of times at the Emirates under Emery’s successor Mikel Arteta.

After the Premier League restart last June, he was frozen out of the squad following an incident on the pitch against Brighton where he grabbed Neal Maupay by the throat.

There were also other reported incidents that led to his exclusion from the first team squad.

The French midfielder has spent the season on loan with Hertha Berlin and is widely expected to be sold by the club this summer.

Marseille are said to be interested in signing him on a permanent deal.
