Tony Cascarino has called on footballers to improve their security following Harry Maguire’s alleged fight in Greece.
The Man United captain was arrested in the early hours of Friday morning along with two other Brits following an incident in Mykonos, since which the world’s most expensive defender has pleaded not guilty to as yet unconfirmed charges.
A police statement suggests Maguire got himself involved in a row, which quickly turned ugly and resulted in Greek police officers being attacked.
And while the exact circumstances of the incident are unknown, Cascarino suggests footballers need to take a more cynical approach to avoid getting themselves into these situations.
“Across my career, it was mainly good chats with people who come up to you, but every now and again you will meet someone who wants trouble,” he told talkSPORT’s Weekend Sports Breakfast.
“Harry should have someone there.
“He’s quite a normal lad; he’ll watch Sheffield United when he can, he’ll go and have a beer with his friends.
“But there’s always someone out there. You can’t do it anymore. You can get yourself into a situation.
“Having security around you is necessary.”
The case has been adjourned until a hearing on Tuesday and it’s understood the defender will now leave Greece.
Manchester United announced in a statement: “Following the appearance in court today we note the adjournment of the case to allow the legal team to consider the case file.
“Harry has pleaded not guilty to the charges. It would be inappropriate for the player or club to comment further while the legal process takes its course.”
