Romelu Lukaku refuses to criticise Manchester United and sends classy message after Inter Milan display – ‘I’m really happy for them’

Romelu Lukaku sent a classy message to Manchester United after proving them wrong once again during Inter Milan’s 5-0 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk.

The timing of Lukaku’s double, which extended his record of scoring in ten consecutive Europa League games and made it 33 for the season, won’t have gone unnoticed by Red Devils fans.

It helped to send Inter through to the final against Sevilla, the night after Man United were knocked out of the competition by the Spanish club in the other semi-final.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could’ve done with some of Lukaku’s ruthless forward play on Sunday night, and many would argue United have lacked a world-class number 9 for much of the season, despite flashes of quality from Anthony Martial.

Lukaku has not shied away from talking about his Manchester United exit over the past year, but on this occasion he opted to be magnanimous.

‘Harry Maguire will never be Virgil van Dijk’ – Criticism of Man United defender too harsh, says Danny Murphy

When asked by BT Sport if he would’ve relished a final against United and a chance to prove them wrong, he said: “No. United tried their hardest. They had a really good season, Ole did a really good job.

“Greenwood’s coming through, Martial, Rashford – I expected all of that.

“I’m really happy for them. They look really good for next season, I have no doubts.”

Before the Belgian completed the rout against, Lautaro Martinez scored a fantastic header and a wonderful curling effort either side of Danilo D’Ambrosio’s goal.

Meanwhile, Lukaku isn’t the only former Man United star to progress through to a final that the Red Devils wish they were in.

Ashley Young delivered a fine performance for the Serie A side, while Alexis Sanchez will hope to be fit enough to start against Sevilla after being left on the bench on Monday.

And for Shakhtar Donetsk, well, the less said the better as they suffered the heaviest defeat in Europa League semi-final history.
