Andreas Christensen became the first Chelsea player to receive a red card since Tiemoue Bakayoko’s horror show against Watford in 2018.
For the first time in 89 Premier League games, a Blues player was given their marching orders and it could not have come at a worse time or against a more ruthless opponent.
Sadio Mane’s brace sealed Liverpool’s 2-0 Premier League victory at Chelsea after Andreas Christensen’s ‘crazy’ red card and Kepa Arrizabalaga’s howler.
Mane bagged his first league goals at Stamford Bridge as Liverpool pounced on defender Christensen’s dismissal, coasting to the win and even handing a second-half debut to new signing Thiago Alcantara.
Chelsea kept shape and threatened several times for the bulk of an engaging first half – but then Christensen’s fully deserved red card changed the game.
The Denmark international rugby tackled the goal-bound Mane, just as he was bracing to chip a stranded Kepa.
The last player to see red was Bakayoko at Vicarage Road during a disastrous 30-minute cameo which few will ever forget.
In the space of just half an hour in Hertfordshire, the £40million signing lost the ball seven times, misplaced four passes and was booked twice as a bemused Mike Dean produced a red.
On both occasions, Bakayoko conceded possession and then earned himself two silly yellow cards.
While Christensen’s afternoon in west London was not perhaps as calamitous, the 24-year-old knows he surely has to improve in the future.
