Is Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp a hypocrite for criticising Frank Lampard’s spending at Chelsea?
In light of the Blues splashing more than £200million on new players ahead of the 2020/21 campaign, Klopp questioned the approach of clubs who are ‘owned by countries and oligarchs’ in the current climate.
Chelsea have been significantly busier than any other Premier League club, signing Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Kai Havertz and Ben Chilwell for large fees – but the Blues have been playing catch-up following last season’s transfer ban.
Yesterday, Lampard hit back at Klopp, highlighting big-money signings like Virgil van Dijk, Alisson, Fabinho, Naby Keita, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah – who cost Liverpool a total of £297m combined.
Laura Woods, speaking on talkSPORT Breakfast, backed the Blues boss in his latest war of words with the Liverpool manager, saying Klopp’s comments were ‘a bit rich’ – if you’ll excuse the pun.
She said: “I think it’s a little bit unfair to criticise Frank Lampard, who didn’t have a window.
“One of those deals, Ziyech, was already done.
“I think it’s a bit rich (ha!) to be doing that.”
It’s not the first time Klopp and Lampard have clashed, and Ally McCoist suggests there might still be some bitterness between the pair.
During Chelsea’s 5-3 defeat at Anfield in July, the two managers were involved in a fiery exchange on the touchline, before Lampard branded Liverpool as ‘arrogant’.
McCoist added: “Maybe there’s a bad taste left in the mouth there.
On Klopp’s comments, the Scotsman continued: “Why even get involved in it? It’s nothing to do with you, just concentrate on your own affairs.”
