Liverpool legend Graeme Souness reveals one concern he has about Diogo Jota signing

Graeme Souness believes Diogo Jota’s lack of big match experience could impact his Liverpool career.

The Portugal winger joined the Reds in a £41million deal from Wolves last weekend.

He became Jurgen Klopp’s third signing of the summer, following Kostas Tsimikas and Thiago Alcantara through the door at Anfield.

While Souness, who won five league titles with Liverpool in the 1970s and 80s, is thrilled with Thiago’s arrival, he has a ‘question mark’ over Jota.

He told The Sunday Times: “Thiago will understand that you’re playing in cup finals every week because the opposition badly wants to beat you. He can deal with all that.

“That would be my only question mark against Diogo Jota, Liverpool’s other new signing.

“At Wolves, it wasn’t a cup final every week but it will be at Liverpool, so he has to show that he’s ready for that.

“Otherwise, he fits the bill to deputise anywhere in that front three. He’s got great technique and understanding of the game.”

Jota will provide competition for Liverpool’s front three of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.

The 23-year-old made his Reds debut as a second-half substitute in a 7-2 Carabao Cup win over Lincoln, and could make his Premier League bow in Monday’s clash with Arsenal.

Last week, Liverpool assistant Pep Lijnders revealed Jota was like a ‘monster’ in training.

He said: “Diogo, what can I say? His technical level is on the same as our front three.

“He has so much future in the game and he will have a great pathway inside our club. He’s like a pressing monster, so he will fit in straight away.

“We played against each other when he was very young. In Portugal, they all say what a great signing Liverpool made, because they know exactly how he is and what kind of potential he still has.

“He will fit into our style. We are happy with him, and all the things we heard are true. He is a very professional, passionate, dedicated, brave player.”

“I prefer to give my money to charities than to give my money to the FA and being fined. So I won’t discuss it. I won’t speak about it.”
