Talks between Chelsea and Rennes reach ‘crucial stage’ over Edouard Mendy transfer

Chelsea have reached a ‘crucial stage’ in talks with Rennes to sign Edouard Mendy, according to reports.

Blues boss Frank Lampard is understood to be on the lookout for a new goalkeeper having lost faith in Kepa Arrizabalaga.

The Spaniard became the club’s record signing when he joined in a £71.6million deal from Athletic Bilbao in 2018.

After helping Chelsea win the Europa League in his debut season, he struggled for form in the 2019/20 campaign.

Journalist Kevin Palmer claims £18m-rated Mendy, who only joined Rennes last year, could be Chelsea’s next big summer arrival.

He said: “I’m hearing that Rennes keeper Edouard Mendy could be the next big arrival at Chelsea as talks reach a crucial stage… but he is not their only goalkeeper option this summer.”

Chelsea have already brought in Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Thiago Silva and Ben Chilwell in what has been a busy summer in west London.

And Kepa could be the next Blues player to have his starting place at risk amid transfer links to Mendy.

Last month, Chelsea technical and performance adviser Petr Cech admitted the club could bring in a new goalkeeper.

He said: “Kepa struggled last season, that is unquestionable.

“But the club invested in him and gave him a long-term contract because they believe he has the qualities and attributes to be successful.

“Additions will be made to the squad, perhaps even in goal, and this is what is being discussed now.

“But nobody is giving up on Kepa and we all hope he has a great future.”
