Borussia Dortmund were reportedly left baffled as Manchester United made a last-ditch bid to sign Nico Schulz on Deadline Day.
The Red Devils tried and failed to sign Jadon Sancho from the German club throughout the summer transfer window, which slammed shut on Monday night.
And it turns out the 20-year-old is not the only Dortmund player United tried and failed to sign.
According to ESPN, the Red Devils ditched their pursuit of Sancho and offered to pay £1million to bring in left-back Schulz, 27, on a season-long loan.
It is understood Dortmund rejected the offer following the saga surrounding United’s attempts to land Sancho, which raised serious questions about the club’s recruitment.
The Red Devils ended up signing Alex Telles from Porto in a £15m deal, while Edinson Cavani also joined on a free transfer.
Most United fans will be underwhelmed with their efforts in the transfer window, with Donny van de Beek the only other major signing.
It was no secret Sancho was the top target, but Ed Woodward failed to match Dortmund’s £108m valuation.
The club were crying out for a centre-back during the 6-1 defeat to Tottenham, although no signings were made in that position.
“I don’t really see how any of the players they brought in will make much of a difference at Manchester United right now,” talkSPORT host Hugh Woozencroft said.
“The recruitment at Manchester United has been shambolic.”
