Tottenham have signed Carlos Vinicius on a season-long loan from Benfica, the Premier League club have confirmed.
The Portuguese side on Thursday announced an agreement was in place for Vinicius to join Spurs, with the north Londoners paying a £2.7million loan fee and having the option to sign the 25-year-old on a permanent basis for £40m at the end of the season.
And Tottenham have finally confirmed the loan signing of Brazil-born Vinicius, who is expected to provide back-up for talismanic forward Harry Kane.
Jose Mourinho has been chasing a second striker for many months now, with Spurs checking out many targets such as Danny Ings, Haris Seferovic and Arkadiusz Milik.
But Vinicius, who will wear the No.45 shirt at Spurs, has been chosen as the man to provide cover for and also compete with Kane, and he’ll hope to build on his fine 2019/20 season now he’s joined English football.
On completing his move to Spurs, Vinicius vowed to bring a first trophy to the club since 2008.
He said: “I want to say to everyone that together we will taste success. I’m here to join this family to share your joy and bring home some silverware.”
The forward netted 24 goals in all competitions last season – ending the campaign with a scoring rate of better than one in two – and he’ll hope to prove himself away from Portugal.

His last exit from the country was a disappointment with only two goals scored in 16 games for Monaco in 2018/19, but Vinicius proved when he joined Benfica from the Ligue 1 outfit that he knows where the back of the net is.
In fact, Vinicius’ form with Benfica saw them place an £89m (€100m) release clause in his contract, and had the media lauding him as one of Europe’s most prolific strikers.
Vinicius doesn’t only excel at scoring goals however, as he also chipped in with 13 assists last season to record either a goal or assist every 71 minutes.
Unsurprisingly, one media outlet reacted to the striker’s incredible performances by writing: ‘Without question, he has been one of the greatest strikers in world football over the last year.’
