James Rodriguez is still battling an injury to his testicles that was sustained in Everton’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool earlier this month.
Carlo Ancelotti said the Colombia playmaker was unlikely to feature in the 2-0 defeat to Southampton last weekend, but he ended up playing through the pain for the full 90 minutes.
However, Spanish outlet Marca report the 29-year-old still has an inflammation to his testicular area, though he is expected to feature in the the clash at St James’ Park.
Rodriguez has adjusted to the Premier League seamlessly this season, helping Everton to the top of the table with three goals and as many assists in his opening six matches.
It is understood the playmaker is receiving treatment for his injury and a full return to training is looking likely within the next few days.
Earlier this month, talkSPORT co-host and Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend backed the Toffees to have a strong campaign with Rodriguez in their ranks, but insisted they are not title contenders.
