Neymar deserves more respect for what he’s done in the game, rather than being continuously written off as ‘overrated’.
That’s according to Jamie O’Hara, who hit back at fellow talkSPORT pundit Jason Cundy’s persistent criticism of the Brazil and Paris Saint-Germain ace.
Sports Bar host Cundy has a long-standing problem with Neymar, and has often said on air that he doesn’t buy into the hype surrounding the Brazilian posterboy.
Back in 2019, he said Manchester City and England forward Raheem Sterling is a better player, while earlier this year he said Neymar, despite helping PSG reach the Champions League final, is massively ‘overrated’.
This week saw the latest episode of Cundy’s crusade against the 28-year-old, saying he’d pick Marcus Rashhford over the Brazilian ‘every day of the week’ after the Manchester United star scored his first career hat-trick in the Champions League.
But, while his theatrics and apparent arrogance may rub many people up the wrong way, O’Hara insists Neymar’s standing in the game cannot be doubted.
The striker is currently Brazil’s fifth all-time appearance holder with 103 caps, and stands just 13 goals shy of equalling football icon Pele’s all-time scoring record for the nation.
And the former Tottenham midfielder insists Neymar deserves more respect from Cundy and his other haters.
Responding to the ex-Chelsea defender’s latest tirade, O”Hara said on the talkSPORT Breakfast: “All he goes on about is Neymar!
“I love Rashford, I think he’s been incredible and a real inspiration for young men right now.
“He’s done incredible things and what he’s doing at the moment is amazing for the country, he’s not a politician but he’s leading by example as a very young man.
“He is world class and I totally agree with that.
“But Jason has got a thing for Neymar. Why does he always go on about ‘I’d have Sterling and I’d have Rashford over Neymar’?
“Neymar’s got over 100 caps for Brazil and he’s going to break Pele’s goalscoring record – I think you have to put a bit of respect on his name for what he’s done in the game.
“I think he needs to get off his back a little bit – he has one bad game for PSG and everyone slaughters him!
“He’s done incredible things in the game, in my opinion.”
