Liverpool will set a remarkable English top-flight record if they beat Aston Villa on Sunday evening, with Jurgen Klopp’s side making an impressive start to the embryonic 2020/21 season.
The Reds are once again setting the benchmark and have won all three of their Premier League matches so far.
Aston Villa also have a 100 per cent record but have played a game fewer than their Premier League rivals.
It will be Villa who stand in Liverpool’s way at Villa Park in Sunday’s 7.15pm kick-off with someone’s perfect record set to be ended.
If Jurgen Klopp’s side can win then it will be the third consecutive season where they have won their opening four games. A feat no one has ever achieved in top flight history.
Liverpool’s opening three fixtures have been in no way easy. A well-drilled Leeds side were seen off in a seven goal thriller while their other victories came against Chelsea and Arsenal.
Dean Smith’s side will not be a walkover, though, with the midlands club strengthening well in the transfer market.
They’ve signed Ollie Watkins, Bertrand Traore, Matty Cash and Emiliano Martinez while Ross Barkley has just joined from Chelsea on loan.
Villa are actually the form team at the moment holding the longest current unbeaten streak of any side in the Premier League at six games.
New goalkeeper Martinez has kept back-to-back clean sheets following his move from Arsenal, meaning they are the only side in the Premier League to not have conceded a goal yet.
Keeping out a Liverpool side who are averaging three goals a game so far will be a tall order with Sadio Mane particularly enjoying playing against Villa.
In his six appearances against them, he has netted six times including the fastest ever Premier League hat-trick.
Back in 2015, when he was playing for Southampton, the forward struck a treble in the space of just two minutes and 56 seconds.
Aston Villa also have a particular problem playing against reigning league champions. They are winless in their last 15 games against the previous season’s winners, including a 12-match streak of defeats.
