Aston Villa smashed Liverpool 7-2 in one of the most astonishing results in Premier League history.
Ollie Watkins scored a first-half hat-trick and Jack Grealish played a starring role as the Midlands club humiliated the champions at Villa Park with a remarkable performance on Sunday night.
It is the heaviest defeat Liverpool have suffered since 1963, when they beaten by Tottenham by the same scoreline, and the worst loss Jurgen Klopp has ever had in his managerial career.
It was a sensational end to a sensational day of Premier League football which saw 25 goals scored in the six games played.
Earlier on Sunday, Liverpool’s great rivals Manchester United were also humiliated – losing 6-1 at home to Tottenham and their former manager Jose Mourinho.
That will be of little consolation to Liverpool, who were simply overwhelmed by a Villa side which have now won all three games this season.
The Reds finished 64 points ahead of Villa last season as they won the title at a canter, with Dean Smith’s side only avoiding relegation on the final day of the campaign.
But Liverpool had no answer to Villa’s attacking prowess as they were run ragged at the back and conceded seven goals for the first time in the Premier League.
The champions got off to a terrible start when goalkeeper Adrian, who was deputising for the injured Alisson, committed his FIFTH error leading to a goal when his wayward pass was picked up by Grealish, who put the ball on a plate for Watkins in the fourth minute.
Watkins, a £28million club record signing from Brentford, then doubled his side’s lead in the 22nd minute with a fine top corner finish past Adrian.
Mohamed Salah pulled one back for Liverpool, but it was in vain as John McGinn restored Villa’s two-goal cushion with a deflected volley.
Watkins completed his hat-trick inside 39 minutes when he tapped home from close range – a remarkable performance from a man who had never scored in the top-flight prior to this game.
Villa did not let up in the second-half when Ross Barkley netted a debut goal with another deflected strike ten minutes after the restart.
Salah got his second of the match on the hour mark, but it was a merely a consolation as Grealish – who had claimed three assists – then struck twice more for the hosts to wrap up a stunning 7-2 victory.
While Liverpool will hold an inquest into this woeful performance, Villa will take great confidence in their incredible display as they join Everton in being the only Premier League clubs to hold a 100 per cent record this season.
