October 4, 2020 will be remembered as one of the most memorable days in Premier League history.
Just when we thought we could not get a bigger shock than Tottenham thrashing Manchester United 6-1 at Old Trafford… we were wrong.
Reigning Premier League champions Liverpool suffered a 7-2 defeat against Aston Villa, who only preserved their top-flight status by one point last season.
The result meant Jurgen Klopp suffered his heaviest ever managerial defeat, surpassing Man City’s 5-0 thrashing of his Liverpool side in 2017 and his Mainz team’s 6-1 loss to Werder Bremen in 2006.
It was also the first time the reigning English top-flight champions had conceded seven goals in a league match since Arsenal against Sunderland in 1953.
Another unwanted record saw the Reds suffer their heaviest defeat since losing 7-2 to Tottenham in 1963.
Ollie Watkins scored a hat-trick inside 39 minutes as other goals from Jack Grealish (2), John McGinn and Ross Barkley embarrassed Liverpool.
It has, arguably, taken the spotlight off Manchester United, who were dominated by Tottenham in their own backyard.
Bruno Fernandes had given the Red Devils a second-minute lead, before quickfire goals from Tanguy Ndombele and Heung-min Son turned the game in Spurs’ favour.
A 28th-minute red card for Anthony Martial for slapping Erik Lamela helped Tottenham’s cause as Harry Kane got on the scoresheet and Son added a fourth before half-time.
Serge Aurier and a Kane penalty took Tottenham’s tally to six as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer dubbed the loss his lowest moment at Man United.
It was a perfect result for Spurs boss Jose Mourinho, who bossed the Red Devils between 2016 and 2018.
There was drama elsewhere on Sunday too, as 25 goals were scored across the six games taking place.
Another surprising result occurred when West Ham put three past a hapless Leicester at the King Power in the 12pm kick-off.
Goals from Michail Antonio, Jarrod Bowen and Pablo Fornals put an end to the Foxes’ 100 per cent start to the season.
Elsewhere, Arsenal edged past Sheffield United 2-1, Wolves secured a 1-0 victory against Fulham, while Southampton ran out 2-0 winners over West Brom.
Sunday’s Premier League results
Leicester 0-3 West Ham
Southampton 2-0 West Brom
Arsenal 2-1 Sheffield United
Wolves 1-0 Fulham
Manchester United 1-6 Tottenham
Aston Villa 7-2 Liverpool
