Liverpool have opened talks with Schalke defender Ozan Kabak regarding a £30million January swoop as they bid to fill the void left by the injured Virgil van Dijk.
The Netherlands star will miss the remainder of the 2019/20 campaign after damaging his anterior cruciate ligament in last weekend’s Merseyside derby against Everton.
And with the Reds placing no timescale on Van Dijk’s return, they are now on the hunt for cover with Kabak firmly on their radar.
Italian media outlet Sport Media Set recently reported that the 20-year-old was wanted by the reigning Premier League champions.
And now the Mirror claim that discussions are ongoing between both clubs regarding a potential deal, which would see the German side initially bank £20m, when the transfer window reopens.
It’s understood further payments would loaded into the deal, making the overall transfer worth in the region of £30m.
Schalke valued Kabak at £40m before the coronavirus pandemic had a huge impact globally on club’s finances.
Liverpool may face a fight to secure Kabak’s signature though, with the youngster not short of admirers.
AC Milan are one of a host of top European sides monitoring Kabak’s progress, most recently expressing an interest in signing him during the summer.
Schalke only signed Kabak last summer in a £13.5million deal from Bundesliga rivals Stuttgart.
The former Galatasaray academy product is under contract at the Veltins Arena until the summer of 2024.
