Manchester United legend Roy Keane is one of the early favourites to be the next Salford City manager, nine years after his last job.
The former Red Devils captain has been linked with the role following the departure of Graham Alexander just five games into the club’s first ever season in the English Football League.
The League Two club axed Alexander on Monday morning despite their unbeaten start to the campaign, with two wins and three draws from their opening five matches.
Paul Scholes – one of the club’s famous Man United legend co-owners – has been placed in temporary charge of Salford and will take charge of the team for Saturday’s trip to Port Vale.
He will remain in charge until a permanent successor to Alexander is found, and the Daily Mirror claim Keane is one of the favourites for the job.
The former United captain was in the stands at the Peninsula Stadium for the 2-2 draw with Tranmere Rovers on Saturday, which ultimately proved to be Alexander’s final game as boss.
Warren Joyce, the boss of Salford’s development squad, is the current bookmakers’ favourite for the job, while former Wigan boss Paul Cook is also a contender.
Keane is also in the running, with the former midfielder reportedly keen to return to management after almost a decade since his last top job.
The Irishman’s last management spell in charge of Ipswich Town ended in 2011. Since then, the former Sunderland manager has had spells as assistant boss at Republic of Ireland, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest, all under Martin O’Neill.
When not in the dugout, Keane often works as a pundit and is famed for his blunt and often brutal analysis.
If he gets the Salford job, he’d be answerable to his former United team-mates Scholes, Gary and Phil Neville, David Beckham, Ryan Giggs and Nicky Butt, who are co-owners of the League Two club.
