Marcus Rashford selflessly gives away hat-trick penalty to let Anthony Martial score first goal of season in Manchester United’s thrashing of RB Leipzig

Marcus Rashford is a hero both on and off the pitch and showed he was the perfect teammate in Manchester United’s Champions League win on Wednesday.

The England star has been making headlines for his campaign to end child food poverty while also delivering on the pitch.

Rashford came off the bench for Ole Gunnar Solskajer’s side in the 64th minute and quickly scored to put the Red Devils 2-0 up.

It was nearly chalked off, though, when the linesman raised his flag but replays showed he was in his own half when Bruno Fernandes played him through.

Rashford quickly added a second and then had a chance of a hat-trick when Man United were awarded a penalty when Martial was brought down in the box.

The 22-year-old passed up the chance to take the spot kick so Martial could take it and grab a much needed goal for his confidence.

Karma rewarded Rashford, though, as an opportunity presented itself in the closing stages and he completed his treble.

He was just the second player to come off the bench and score a hat-trick for Manchester United.

The first being his manager Solskjaer, who hit three after coming on against Nottingham Forest in 1999.

Rashford told BT Sport: “I feel confident with Anthony [Martial] taking them [penalties], so no worries about that.

“It was a real team performance. The ones who started did well and the substitutes did well too. We can’t ask for much more than that in terms of the attitude and the intent to go and kill the game off. It worked in our favour.”
