It was a bad day at the office for England goalkeepers Nick Pope and Jordan Pickford.
Everton ‘keeper Pickford made another mistake to let Brighton score earlier in the day – but fortunately for him it didn’t cost his side any points.
In the evening kick-off, Pope was at fault when he conceded a penalty in Burnley’s 3-1 defeat to Newcastle at St James’ Park.
Gareth Southgate now has the unenviable task of selecting a goalkeeper for the upcoming Nations League games.
In the match in the North East, the home side took a 14th-minute lead when Callum Wilson chested keeper Karl Darlow’s clearance off to Saint-Maximin, who twisted and turned on the edge of the penalty area before firing into the bottom corner.
Joelinton came close in the 40th minute but could not get enough power into his header. The effort was easily saved by goalkeeper Nick Pope, and Newcastle went in at the break still 1-0 ahead.
The visitors were much better after the break and finally got their reward with 61 minutes gone.
Josh Brownhill laid the ball into the path of full-back Phil Bardsley, whose half-cleared cross was superbly volleyed home by Westwood.
However, Newcastle were back in front within four minutes when Saint-Maximin skipped past full-back Charlie Taylor and crossed for Wilson to score his third goal in four league games.
They increased their lead from the penalty spot with 12 minutes remaining after Pope had tripped substitute Ryan Fraser in his attempt to atone for a heavy touch, and succeeded only in tripping him.
Wilson calmly chipped the spot-kick straight down the middle as the keeper dived to his right to make it 3-1.
