Raul Jimenez scores winning goal and avoids red card as Wolves beat Leeds

Raul Jimenez lived a charmed life as his deflected strike gave Wolves a 1-0 victory over Leeds at Elland Road.

Wolves were good value for the win but were perhaps fortunate to not finish the game with ten men as Jimenez avoided a red card late on.

The Mexican kicked out at Robin Koch after being brought down by the Whites defender, however, the referee David Coote and VAR Michael Oliver didn’t punish Jimenez.

Both sides had put the ball in the net before Jimenez’s strike, however, Patrick Bamford’s header and a well-taken goal by Romain Saiss were both correctly ruled out for offside.

While the visitors were deserving winners, luck left Leeds as they were forced to make a change before the start of the game as captain Liam Cooper’s groin injury, sustained on international duty with Scotland, flared up again.

But this didn’t stop the hosts from starting well and they thought they’d taken the lead when Bamford headed the home following a cleverly worked corner but the striker was correctly ruled offside.

They then had a penalty appeal turned down as Helder Costa fell after a slight clash with Joao Moutinho but replays show the Leeds forward hit the deck far too easily.

It was only at the end of the first half when Wolves properly threatened as Illan Meslier saved a fierce Daniel Podence strike.

The visitors carried on that momentum into the second half and got a goal as Saiss teed himself up before brilliantly finding the corner of the net. However, the goal was chalked off as Podence was offside in the build-up.

A let-off for Leeds but Wolves’ luck was in on 70 minutes as Jimenez’s shot from the edge of the box bounced in after taking a sizeable deflection off Kalvin Phillips and wrongfooting Meslier.

This proved to be all that separated the two sides but Jimenez was perhaps lucky not to get an early bath as he kicked out at Koch on 89 minutes.
