Mustafi is out of contract next summer and enjoyed a brief renaissance under Mikel Arteta, starting 15 of 17 games under the Spaniard before requiring knee surgery in July.

The 28-year-old looked certain to leave under predecessor Unai Emery, with the former Sevilla manager admitting it would be ‘positive’ for Mustafi and teammate Mohamed Elneny to continue their careers elsewhere.

Football London understand the 2014 World Cup winner hired a Germany-based agent last January, with his father working at the same sports management company, and is said to be keen to move to a Serie A side.

Arteta was asked about Mustafi’s contract situation following his injury diagnosis and remained coy on whether or not the centre back would stay at the north London outfit after joining four years ago from Valencia for £35million.

“That’s something the club has to address but he knows my opinion,” said Arteta.

“I’m really happy with him as you can see. The way he’s playing, how committed he is with everything we’re trying to do, the level in his performance ever three or four days, he’s been really consistent.”

Meanwhile William Saliba will be hopeful of finally getting regular game time at the Emirates with the Gunners facing a congested fixture list with four games in just eight days.

Summer signing Gabriel has played in all but one of the club’s Premier League and Europa League matches thus far, while both Rob Holding and David Luiz are sidelined with injuries.
