Arsenal’s Mohamed Elneny tests positive for COVID-19 as Premier League records steep rise in new cases despite LESS tests

Arsenal’s Mohamed Elneny has tested positive for COVID-19 as the Premier League revealed an alarming rise in cases from the most recent round of testing.

The top-flight returned 16 positive coronavirus cases from 1,207 players and staff tested last week, the highest weekly number since the testing process began.

Moreover, several hundred less people were part of this round of testing due to the international break, so the true number of positive cases among Premier League footballers may be considerably higher.

Elneny has become the latest to test positive for the virus while on international duty with Egypt, where Liverpool star Mohamed Salah is also self-isolating with COVID.

Meanwhile, Tottenham right-back Matt Doherty tested positive while on international duty with Wales.

Jim White and Simon Jordan say fixtures schedule needs to be changed or clubs will start purposely getting knocked out of 'lesser' competitions

The numbers raise more issues about the timing of the international break and officials will be concerned about the impact of top-flight players returning to their clubs later this week.

Spurs boss Jose Mourinho earlier criticised the international break in a sarcastic Instagram post from inside the Premier League bubble.

He wrote: “Amazing week of football. Great emotions in the national team matches, superb friendlies and total safety.

“Covid test results after matches been played, randomers running on the pitch while team sessions are taking place and much more.
“After another training session with only 6 players, it is now time to take care of myself.”
