‘England’s Under-21s would beat Scotland!’ – Simon Jordan and ex-Liverpool man Danny Murphy poke fun at talkSPORT host Jim White

You may or may not have noticed the strong Scottish presence on talkSPORT.

Alan Brazil, Ally McCoist, Jim White – we even get Sir Rod Stewart on from time to time.

So as you can imagine, Scotland are the source of great fun among our presenters.

But for the first time in a while, 22 years in fact, the Scots had something to shout about when Steve Clarke’s men sealed qualification for the postponed Euro 2020, their first major tournament since 1998.

What’s more, they’ll go straight into Group D, meaning a clash with England awaits next summer, wherever the tournament may be.

But old habits die hard. Simon Jordan and Danny Murphy couldn’t help but poke a bit of fun at Scottish presenter Jim White on Monday’s show.

Sir Rod Stewart's family had 'tears in their eyes' as Scotland qualified for Euro 2020 and says he's already moved anniversary celebrations to watch England vs. Scotland

A stunned White said: “Would you like to go on record with what you just told me? That the England B team would be Scotland at the Euros next summer?”

And Jordan replied: “I think the Under-21s would beat Scotland. Danny said the B team but I don’t think they would be required.”

As you can imagine, this got a few nibbles, and a furious Celtic fan phoned up to remind us that several Premier League players, the likes of Andy Robertson, John McGinn and Scott McTominay, all play for Scotland.

At that point, the game was up, and the Englishmen admitted they were just on the wind up.

Murphy responded first: “They’re (England) not going to roll them over. They’re competitive players who’ve got quality.

“But when you look at England’s XI compared to Scotland’s XI, nine times out of ten they should beat them if they apply themselves properly.

“It’s the exact same way as if you compared Liverpool’s team to West Brom, nine times out of ten they should beat them.”

Jordan added: “I was being a little bit facetious because Danny started by saying he would put a B team out. Jim was tubthumping.

“Of course I respect Scotland and their achievement. I was a great admirer of Gordon Strachan and the work he did to get the momentum going.

“I think Steve Clarke has done a fantastic job.

“But when you’ve got a rabble rouser in Jim White staring you up and trying to divide you against what your thoughts are, you have to be realistic about it.

“I suspect the only thing you’ll take away from Wembley or wherever the game is played is a piece of pitch like you did in 1977.”
