Bruno Fernandes comes out on top after VAR penalty drama as Manchester United claim all three points against West Brom

Bruno Fernandes scored the only goal of the game as Manchester United beat West Brom 1-0 at Old Trafford on Saturday night.

He first had a penalty awarded again him, which was overturned by VAR, and then went on to eventually net a spot-kick of his own at the second attempt.

United dominated the first half against West Brom, although the match remained scoreless heading into the break.

Sam Johnstone stopped the hosts getting off to a dream start, with the United academy graduate tipping away Anthony Martial’s goal-bound header inside 100 seconds.

The Baggies shot-stopper produced an even better save when denying the France international’s close-range snapshot after smart team play in the 16th minute.

A deflected Karlan Grant effort and unorthodox Kyle Bartley header represented West Brom’s best chances.

United were breathing a huge sigh of relief within minutes of the second half getting under way.

Referee David Coote pointed to the spot having adjudged Bruno Fernandes to have brought down Conor Gallagher in the box.

The irate Portuguese midfielder claimed he got the ball and saw the decision overturned after Coote watched a replay of the incident on the advice of the VAR.

After Rashford saw a long-range effort superbly saved and Conor Townsend was thwarted by the feet of De Gea, Fernandes would again be involved in another penalty decision

Coote pointed to the spot after Juan Mata’s cross hit Darnell Furlong’s hand, leading to the Portuguese stepping up for a penalty that Johnstone saved low to his left.

The Baggies’ celebrations were cut short, though, as the goalkeeper had strayed well off his line, with the VAR ordering a retake.

Fernandes would not miss twice, lashing into the top left-hand corner.

The game finished 1-0 – a much needed win for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
