Donny van de Beek has had a pretty tough time of it at Manchester United – but he’s having a ball on international duty with the Netherlands.
The former Ajax star has struggled to make a name for himself in England since rubber-stamping a £35million move to Old Trafford and hasn’t started a Premier League match yet.
He boasts just one goal and one assist in ten appearances for the Red Devils. It’s a different story when it comes to him and the international scene, though.
The 23-year-old got on the scoresheet in the Netherlands’ 1-1 draw at home to Spain, slotting home a cross from the left beyond Unai Simon.
Van de Beek may be short of confidence at United but he cuts a player who believes in himself when wearing the orange jersey, as you can see from the finish.
The goal also brought up an interesting stat about Van de Beek, highlighting just how big the contrast is between his form for club and country.
He’s scored twice with his last two shots for the Netherlands having also netted in their 1-1 draw with Italy in the Nations League last month.
Van de Beek’s decision to join Man United has been criticised by Dutch football icon Marco van Basten, who said the player should have waited to sign for a different club.
“Donny should not have gone to Manchester United,” Van Basten told Rondo.
“When you are a good player you want to play every week.
“It is really bad for a player like Donny to play only six or seven games this year. That is shocking for your match rhythm.
“I know he is earning loads and loads more than he used to. But as a top player you have to be critical and look at the chances of playing when you sign for a new club.
“Donny should have waited for better prospects and signed for another club.”
