England hero Phil Foden thanks Gareth Southgate for helping him overcome ‘massive mistake’ in Iceland to earn redemption at Wembley

Phil Foden thanked Gareth Southgate for helping him through his ‘massive mistake’ as he gained his redemption against Iceland.

The Manchester City midfielder netted twice as England’s new generation staked their claim for a place at next summer’s European Championship and brought a challenging year to a convincing end at Wembley.

From Harry Maguire’s Greek court case and the high-profile bubble breach by Mason Greenwood and Foden, to injury headaches, empty stands and his own bout of COVID-19, this has been a tough autumn for Three Lions boss Southgate.

But a strange, testing and truncated international year came to a comfortable conclusion at Wembley, with Foden netting his first England goals after Declan Rice and Mason Mount efforts to seal a 4-0 win.

The 20-year-old was sent home alongside Greenwood after his indiscretions in Iceland in September, but his goalscoring display and diligent approach with City is setting Foden back on the right path.

He told talkSPORT’s Faye Carruthers: “I’ve always tried to put that in the past; I made a massive mistake and everyone makes massive mistakes in life.

“I want to put that behind me now and look forward and I’m just really happy to put a good performance in tonight.

“I’m just looking forward really.”

Foden’s talent has never been in question; Pep Guardiola considers him the most talented player he has ever worked with after all.

But the Stockport native made sure to thank Southgate for his continued support and advice during the most testing period of his burgeoning career.

“Massively,” he said when asked about just how much the England boss has helped him. “I think he has got kids my age so he understands that, sometimes, kids make mistakes.

“He is always there for me, which helped me a lot and I needed that in that moment in time.

“So I’d like to thank him a lot.”
