Gareth Bale comes off bench to score first Tottenham goal in seven years as Spurs beat Brighton amid VAR controversy

Gareth Bale came off the bench to score the winning goal in Tottenham’s 2-1 win over Brighton on Sunday.

The Wales forward, who rejoined the club on loan from Real Madrid during the summer, headed home his first Spurs goal in seven years in the 73rd minute.

Tottenham took an early lead after Adam Lallana was adjudged to have fouled Harry Kane on the line of the penalty box.

Kane stepped up to take the penalty and net his 11th goal of the season on 13 minutes.

The Brighton bench were then furious when VAR did not give a penalty for an alleged foul on Leandro Trossard by Matt Doherty.

However, Brighton’s equaliser came in controversial circumstances.

Tottenham were stunned when referee Graham Scott failed to overturn Tariq Lamptey’s 56th-minute goal, despite Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg appearing to be fouled by Solly March in the build-up.

Scott checked his pitchside monitor, but let the Seagulls’ leveller stand to Tottenham’s dismay.

Tottenham threatened to find a winner as Kane and Erik Lamela hit the post in quick succession.

Bale, who replaced Lamela in the 70th minute, ensured Scott’s call did not prolong Tottenham’s winless home start to the Premier League season.

The 31-year-old headed in a cross from former Real Madrid teammate Sergio Reguilon to stake a strong claim for a starting place.

Tottenham have climbed to second in the Premier League table and are just two points behind leaders Liverpool.

Meanwhile, Brighton have lost four of their opening seven matches, winning just once, and remain just two places above the relegation zone.
