Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho fired shots at Real Madrid as Gareth Bale scored the first goal of his second Spurs spell during the 2-1 win over Brighton.
Bale, on loan from Madrid, came off the bench to seal a scrappy three points for Tottenham, seven years after his last goal for the club.
Those seven years, particularly the most recent few, were littered with unpleasantness in the Spanish capital as his relationship with Madrid broke down.
And Mourinho, a former Bernabeu manager, couldn’t help but aim a cheeky dig at Bale’s employers after the Welshman reopened his Spurs account.
The Tottenham manager said: “I am pleased for him because he deserved that. When I have five minutes I am going to Safari to look at Madrid’s website to see what they say.”
Meanwhile, Mourinho was left baffled by Graham Scott’s failure to overturn Brighton’s goal during the victory, which was marred by several controversial decisions.
Harry Kane was accused of dark arts in some quarters when he won a penalty in the first-half, then Brighton were denied one when Matt Doherty tugged at Leandro Trossard.
But the most contentious call came when Tariq Lamptey’s goal for the visitors was allowed to stand despite what seemed to be a clear foul on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the build-up.
Referee Scott was stood on top of the incident at the time and took a second look when advised by VAR, but still decided to stand by his original decision.
Mourinho, giving a much cheerier interview than he might’ve done had the match ended in a draw, was confused by the incident.
He said: “One thing is the VAR, another thing is the referee who has a chance to use the VAR.
“In football, everybody makes mistakes: the players make mistakes, the coaches make mistakes, and the referee makes mistakes.
“From all of us, there is only one who has the chance to repair the mistake, which is the referee.
“If I make a mistake, my team lose. If the players make a mistake, they are punished and the next game they are not even in the team. The referee can make a mistake and repair the mistake.
“For some reason that only Scott can explain, he didn’t do that.”
Tottenham got the right end of the stick when VAR intervened to upgrade Adam Lallana’s foul on Kane from a free-kick to a penalty.
Although Kane was clearly bundled over, the Spurs striker appeared to glance at Lallana and position himself underneath him, while the Brighton man made a more honest, if clumsy, attempt to win the ball.
But Mourinho quickly defended Kane and insisted it was an obvious penalty.
He added: “I don’t even think he knows he is inside the box.
“It was just a clumsy fall from the Brighton player and it’s a clear penalty.”
