Gary Neville raised eyebrows during Tottenham vs Manchester City on Saturday as he likened Harry Kane to Zinedine Zidane.
The Manchester United legend, who played against the French icon for both club and country, was adamant that Kane possesses similar qualities when it comes to hold-up play.
The England captain inspired his side to a 2-0 victory over Pep Guardiola’s City, moving Tottenham top of the table.
After an instance in which the Spurs striker demonstrated his expert technique combined with physicality, Neville made the comparison.
He explained: “I’ll get mocked for saying this, but there’s a little bit of the Zidane in him when he gets the ball in that position.
“How he sort of shields it and protects it.
“It’s the physicality, the touch, and the way he protects the ball, you can never get near it.”
Tottenham took an early lead thanks to a gorgeous finish from Heung-min Son after he collected Tanguy Ndombele’s chipped pass.
City thought they had equalised in the 27th minute when Aymeric Laporte fired home from inside the area.
It was eventually disallowed for handball after the video assistant referee called for the pitchside monitor to be used by Mike Dean, who overturned the decision.
Come the second half, Kane proved everything that Neville had been talking about earlier as he produced Spurs’ second goal.
He collected the ball in the middle of the pitch, turned and fed Giovani Lo Celso who scored immediately after coming off the bench.
