Lionel Messi, Sergio Ramos, David Alaba, plus Wijnaldum at Liverpool and Aguero at Man City among top players whose contracts expire in 2021

Spending large amounts of money on signings is par for the course for most top football clubs, however, there are one or two ways to save up.

The most effective way is by signing players whose contracts expire and next summer will be rare in the amount of top quality free agents available.

Where better to start than Lionel Messi, one of the game’s greatest ever players.

He is currently in his final year at Barcelona after performing a stunning U-turn in the summer despite being so determined for a move away.

It will be interesting to see if he is still keen to leave in 2021.

Arsenal outcast Mesut Ozil will also be available for nothing as will be Manchester United star Juan Mata.

Mata’s teammate Jesse Lingard is also in his final year at Old Trafford, while West Ham forward Michail Antonio could also be on his way out of the club for nothing at the end of June.

But there are a number of other top players who at present will not cost any interested clubs a penny after June 30, 2021.

Gianluigi Donnarumma: Milan – 21 years old

Donnarumma first played in the AC Milan first team in 2015 but he’s still only 21 years old.

Sergio Aguero: Man City – 32 years old

Aguero has been with Man City for more than nine years and is the top scoring player in their history. His goals have won them titles, but the Champions League eludes him.

Georginio Wijnaldum: Liverpool, 29 years old

The Dutchman was heavily linked with a move to Barcelona last summer but decided to see out the final year of his Anfield contract.

Angel Di Maria: Paris Saint-Germain – 32 years old

Sergio Ramos: Real Madrid – 34 years old
