Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has withdrawn from the England squad after sustaining a knee problem, the Football Association has announced.
The extent of the 23-year-old’s injury hasn’t been disclosed by either England or Liverpool, but his club said he will make a return to Anfield to undergo further diagnosis.
England boss Gareth Southgate said on Wednesday evening: “We can’t speculate the exact nature of the injury, it’s not possible until we have seen scans.
“My immediate thoughts are with him because he has had some difficulties with injuries in the past.
“We are hoping it’s not going to be a long-term one. We just have to wait and see.”
However, there are fears that Gomez has damaged his ACL, which could see him have a similar absence to that of Virgil van Dijk, who’s expected to miss the remainder of the season. Fabinho and Trent Alexander-Arnold are also sidelined.
Gomez featured alongside Joel Matip in the 1-1 stalemate with Manchester City at the weekend, while Fabinho had also been filling in at the back this season before he sustained an injury to his thigh.
With both of Liverpool’s first-choice centre-backs potentially out for a while, Jurgen Klopp may be forced to delve into the January transfer market to add defensive cover.
On Tuesday, it was revealed that Alexander-Arnold was expected to be out for up to four weeks.
The 22-year-old was forced off in the draw at Manchester City after pulling up with a calf strain.
If Alexander-Arnold is out for the full four weeks then he’ll miss Premier League clashes against Leicester, Brighton and Wolves and Champions League matches against Atalanta and Ajax.
